Is IT the Be All....?

The new world order

Every now and then, an idea comes along that is so profound, so powerful, so universal that its impact
changes everything like the incandescent light lamp, the automobile, aircraft, computers.  With
computers, we have marvelled at the wonders brought about by information technology and how more
and more IT capability is being developed to keep up with increasing demands.  Today, people talk
about processor power, memory, disk capacity, bandwidth, high resolution displays and network
centric computing, just to name a few.

IT can't do it all

With all the technological wonders brought about by information technology, many would be inclined to
think that technology is the solution that will deliver the pot of gold.  With the promise that IT brings to
bear many companies have attempted to achieve the competitive edge using IT as the sole enabler.
While some companies seem to have achieved their goals in such a manner, others have not achieved
the same measure of success.

In fact, many efforts to depend on IT as the sole enabler to achieve the competitive edge have failed
miserably.  In such instances, these companies experienced confusion, low commitment fragmentation
besides seeing old tasks remaining (with new ones added) and no delivery of the promise of the "better
world" let alone the competitive edge.  The most painful experience for some of these companies
manifested itself in the decrease in customer satisfaction (and the decrease in the number / percentage
of satisfied customers).  These experiences suggest that IT alone cannot deliver the desired competitive
edge.

Achieving successful business transformation

If IT alone cannot deliver what companies need, what then is the answer?  Experience and research tell
us that the other important elements are Business Strategy, Organisational Transformation and
Customer Needs.  Within 3 rings inside the ellipse is an important area of overlap between organisational
transformation and information technology.  This is the sector of organisational transformation that
relates to the technology that is being deployed.  It is important to recognise however, that this area of
transformation is narrower than organisational transformation as a whole.
